Lalizas Horseshoe Lifebuoy Quick RD with Light, 30m Rope and Case Review

A Complete Rail-Ready Recovery Set

A family day afloat rarely keeps every loose item where it started. Jackets migrate, picnic bags move twice and a fender appears under the seat just when somebody wants the seat. In that ordinary shuffle, I want the recovery equipment to remain visible, protected and ready for one clear action. The Lalizas Quick RD set gives the horseshoe, approved light, 30-metre floating rope, rail-mounting case and brackets one proper home, and the live price is £225.

The orange horseshoe provides 142 newtons (N) of buoyancy. Its polyester fabric has a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) backing, a flexible zipped cover and a plastic hook fastening. Lalizas describes the buoy as waterproof and resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Those details matter to me because a stern-rail safety item lives in weather, spray and sun long before the day it might be used.

Lalizas Horseshoe Lifebuoy Quick RD with Light, 30m Rope and Case

A complete set rather than a loose collection

The most useful part of this package is how the pieces relate. A 30 m orange floating rope, 8 mm in diameter, provides a real retrieval line rather than the short connecting line found on many compact horseshoe sets. The durable grey PVC case can be fitted to a handrail, keeps the buoy and rope together and gives the deck a settled arrangement. I can see what is present at a glance, and nobody has to search a locker while the boat is still moving.

The supplied light is a flashing light-emitting diode (LED) model, fully watertight, compact, tamper-resistant and corrosion-resistant. Lalizas publishes an omnidirectional output greater than two candelas for at least two hours. It carries International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), Marine Equipment Directive (MED) and United States Coast Guard recognition, and its lithium battery has a stated five-year life without routine battery replacement. The light also comes with a bracket and one-metre lanyard.

I would mount the case where the helm and crew can reach it without crossing the cockpit or opening an enclosure. The rope needs to be flaked into the case so it can pay out cleanly, not packed into a heroic knot after the last washdown. The light and buoy should release without fouling guard wires, aerial leads or canvas. A calm alongside practice is worth doing because the correct sequence should feel familiar before cold water and surprise enter the picture.

The case also improves family use in a quieter way. It protects the equipment from being treated as another cushion, makes its location obvious to an occasional guest and keeps 30 metres of line away from feet and locker hinges. I like safety equipment that brings order to the boat every day, since that is the equipment most likely to remain complete and accessible.

Lalizas Quick RD vs Crewsaver Hamble vs Ocean Safety Horseshoe Kit vs Plastimo P63465

Horseshoe set Current UK price Difference vs Lalizas Published buoyancy Light Retrieval line Protection Mounting Buoy construction
Lalizas Quick RD complete set £225 — 142 N Flashing LED; SOLAS/MED/USCG-MER; >2 cd for at least 2 hours; five-year lithium battery 30 m floating orange rope; 8 mm diameter Durable grey PVC case Case and light brackets; handrail mounting Orange polyester with PVC backing; waterproof, UV-resistant zipped cover
Crewsaver Hamble set £79 £146 less Not stated on cited set page Flashing SOLAS-approved LED; lithium battery; up to five-year life No retrieval line listed with cited set No protective case listed Rail bracket included Compact horseshoe; white set priced
Ocean Safety Horseshoe kit £79 £146 less Not stated on cited product page Aquaspec LED light in cited retail kit 1.95 m floating safety line; 6 mm diameter No protective case listed Substantial rail bracket included Soft, flexible horseshoe; white kit priced
Plastimo P63465 set £100 £125 less 147 N Fixed lifebuoy light included Lifeline and hook included; 30 m rope not listed Removable PVC-coated cover; no enclosing case listed Stainless-steel bracket included Foam horseshoe with washable yellow cover

Crewsaver and Ocean Safety each advertise a respectable £79 buoy, light and rail-bracket set, while the £100 Plastimo adds published 147 N buoyancy, a fixed light and stainless-steel bracket. The decisive difference is completeness: none of those cited packages lists both a 30 m retrieval rope and an enclosing rail case. Ocean Safety publishes a 1.95 m safety line, and the Crewsaver and Plastimo listings identify neither a comparable 30 m floating line nor a case for the assembled system. I put Lalizas first because the £225 buys the recovery buoy, a clearly specified five-year approved light, a full-length floating rope and protected handrail stowage as one matched installation.

Living with the set aboard

Routine inspection is simple but should be deliberate. I would check the horseshoe fabric and zip, confirm the rope is free of cuts and tangles, inspect its attachment points, make sure the light remains secure in its bracket and note the battery-life date. The case should drain, close and release properly, while rail fastenings should remain tight. After heavy spray, I would rinse the set with fresh water and let it dry before repacking.

The bright orange buoy and rope are sensible choices for visibility, yet colour is only useful when the kit can be launched immediately. I would brief family and guests on where it is and how it releases, without turning departure into a lecture. One calm demonstration does more good than a label nobody has read. The helmsman’s recovery plan, engine controls and reboarding method still matter; this set supplies the first visible support and the line that helps bring a person back toward the boat.

At £225, the Lalizas costs more because it solves storage and retrieval as well as flotation and light. I find that honest value. Buying a compact buoy-and-light set and later adding a suitable 30 m floating rope, a protective case and compatible brackets creates another specification and installation job. Here, each part arrives identified, matched and ready to be placed together on the rail.

My verdict

I would choose the Lalizas Quick RD set for a family cruiser, sailing boat or motorboat whose stern rail needs one complete, orderly recovery station. The 142 N horseshoe, five-year approved light, 30 m floating rope and durable case justify the £225 price because the equipment stays together, protected and ready to deploy.
